Questions and Answers about the KidsOutdoors Campaign

Getting started with KidsOutdoors.com

Who runs the KidsOutdoors Campaign? The campaign is run by The Scout Association, who are working with partners to promote enjoying outdoor activities and experiences.

Why run this campaign? Research for The Scout Association has shown that young people really enjoy taking part in outdoor activities, and 94% agree that it is important for other young people their age to be able to do activities outdoors (see the Why KidsOutdoors? page for more details). However, a huge number of young people do not take part in the recommended amount of exercise that they should. We therefore need to keep promoting opportunities for young people to get out and about and enjoying themselves!

Who is the campaign aimed at? The KidsOutdoors campaign is aimed at young people of all ages, parents, youth leaders, teachers and decision-makers in the UK.

What do you want to achieve? 1,000,000 new outdoor actions! We want more young people to have the opportunity to get out and about enjoying outdoor activities. This might be with family or friends, as a part of a group, or perhaps taking part in after-school activities.

How will you count these outdoor actions? By signing up to the website, anyone can tell us about their outdoor adventures. Whether it’s a video of you taking a parachute jump, or a blog entry about a Scout camp, tell us your story and how many people took part. This way we can count the number of people taking part in outdoor experiences.

Can I tell you about something I’m going to do in the future? Yes. Tell us what your school, Scout Group, family or friends are doing by singing up to the website. When you’ve done the activity make sure you come back and upload your video or blog and let us know what your enjoyed about it!

Can adults post videos, images and blogs on the site? Yes. If you are a parent, teacher or youth leader for example, you could post content telling everyone what you do to help kids enjoy the great outdoors. To get started, all you need to do is register.

I'm a Scout Leader, is there anything I need to be doing? Just carry on delivering a balanced programme and use the outdoors to its full extent. Make sure you and your Scouts sign up to the website so you can share your experiences. We want to know about all the outdoor adventures you've taken part in - whether it's a walk along the local river, or a hike up a mountain.

The April/May 2008 edition of Scouting will have plenty of information and ideas on how you can use the campaign to support Scouting locally.

I want to promote the campaign locally. What resources are there to help me? The Support & Resources section contains resources for you to download and use - we'll be adding to this as the campaign develops.

Can I volunteer for KidsOutdoors? In order to get more kids enjoying the outdoors, adults are needed to help this. By volunteering for clubs or organisations like the Scouts you could help achieve the goal of 1,000,000 new outdoor adventures!

Can I use the KidsOutdoors logo on my materials? Yes. Go to the Support and Resources page to download a logo. It may only be used to support the campaign and not for commercial use. If you would like to apply for a licence for commercial use, please contact us. A Registered Trademark is pending. Is there a KidsOutdoors t-shirt I can buy? Not yet, although it is anticipated that there will be a range of KidsOutdoors goods that you could purchase. Will my child be safe at kidsoutdoors.com? Yes - if they follow the guidelines for safe surfing. We have included a set of safety guidelines for different age ranges in the Safety section of the KidsOutdoors site. If you have any concerns, we would also recommend that you and your child explore the site together.
